about

Isaac and Jared started writing songs together in 2012. The basic idea was that Jared would write a piece on an open tuned acoustic guitar, record it, and hand it over to Isaac. This remained the primary process until we released the final album earlier in 2019. In the beginning Kaylee Thomas played a big part in creating our sound with additional vocals, fiddles, and banjos. And so did Jasper, lending us his house to write and record in along with some extra sprankles. As the years went on Isaac and Jared took it upon themselves to provide the additional sounds. Each portion of this retrospective is separated into Acts. I hope you can enjoy our collaboration of musicianship as much as we have over the last 7 years. Thanks for following along with us!

Act I:
Isaac Diehl had taken a hiatus from the many HipHop projects of his past and Jared Lee was no longer playing with Attack On Uranus. After having recorded a demo track for Isaac, Jared was inspired by the technique iD utilized to write music on the guitar. Isaac had only learned how to play guitar by writing his own music, therefore Jared started only using open tunings in an effort to discharge the muscle memory of playing standard tunings.

Jared and Isaac started writing music slowly as Isaac lived in LFK and Jared was out in KC. During this process they found solace in Jasper’s shed as a perfect place to write and record music. After putting these ideas down, Jared spoke to her about layering the tracks with additional vocals, banjos, and fiddles. And the rest is what became the first Absinthe Mind album, “Your Life Fucking Matters”. We made some dope ass DIY cassette cases and spread the music as far as we could.
2012-2015

Act II:
As a way to create music at a faster pace, Jared opted to record all his acoustic guitar tracks onto an analog 4-track recorder and then dump them off onto iD’s digital recorder in Lawrence. This time however, Kaylee was unavailable due to her expanding her mind by route of her scholastic efforts. Many of the tracks were intended to have Kaylee backing up Jared and Isaac. At this time Isaac worked to add some electric guitars and organs to the raw guitar tracks.

Unfortunately it was during the making of this album Jared found out about the passing of J Parsons, a former artistic collaborator with Jared. Parsons’ work had been the direct inspiration to the title of the group “Absinthe Mind”. This album is dedicated to J Parsons, a beautiful soul who will not be forgotten. “Don’t Ever Fucking Give Up”
2015-2016

Act III:
Isaac had recently moved to KCMO and Jared was working on some different ideas on how to record in a mobile capacity. We used Apple’s Garage Band and recorded exclusively on an iPad, however after 2 tracks we decided to go back to the analog method. These two tracks were recorded at Isaac and Sedona’s house in Waldo. These tracks have not previously been released on an album. “This Never Fucking Happened”.
2016

Act IV:
This record began in addition to Isaac joining 21yrs of Winter. While we used the similar method of recording an analog acoustic track first and then Isaac writing and recording his vocal tracks independently, we added an additional method that was fun. We would run the raw tracks through our PA and performed improvised guitar and synth tracks in a live capacity which was a lot of rad. “Do What You Fucking Love”.
2018

Act V:
While working on writing new material for 21yrs, some of these ideas bled over to the field of Absinthe Mind. Jared was playing bass in 21yrs and some of the new demos seemed more appropriate for AM, so when Travis missed band practice a few weeks in a row Isaac and Jared put together this EP. “I Will Fucking Miss You When You’re Gone”.
January 2019

Act VI:
After Isaac announced he would be returning to Manhattan, KS prior to moving back to the West Coast, we started writing a lot of music. Incidentally, Travis was running about 90 minutes late to practice so again Isaac and Jared decided to quickly write and record this final EP.

It was an amazing journey, and it’s probably not the last time we’ll collaborate on music but it’s the last time for a while most likely. The future is always changing and we’re ever evolving. “You’ve Only Just Fucking Started Shine”.
